Update: 2010 BP MS 150 to Continue As Scheduled As of 4:30 p.m., Friday, April 16, 2010, BP MS 150 organizers have determined the ride will continue as scheduled, despite the expectation of rain on Saturday. We ask that all cyclists arrive at the start lines promptly on time; the Omni Hotel Houston Westside and Rhodes Stadium starts roll out at 6:45 a.m. and Waller Stadium at 8 a.m. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society: Lone Star will continue to monitor and evaluate weekend weather forecasts in coordination with a meteorologist, as the safety of all participants, volunteers and supporters is our primary concern. If a situation arises that causes any change to the ride, we will communicate that information to all participants along the route, at breakpoints, via the BP MS 150 Web site at www.MS150.org, Twitter and Facebook, and by text message. You can get text updates on your cell phone by entering RIDER at 777111. Text messaging charges do apply. Remember to Ride Smart and Ride Safe. Please listen to law enforcement personnel, Ride Marshals and support staff, who are acting in your best interests. We are implementing extra measures and resources at every stage of the route to accommodate additional needs in preparation of weather-related issues on the route and to ensure the safety of all participants. Ultimately, however, your safety is a personal responsibility, so exercise your best judgment in assessing your own cycling skills and comfort level in riding this weekend. Regardless of conditions this weekend, the National MS Society: Lone Star’s mission remains steadfast: to raise crucial funds to support MS research and services for 20,000 men, women and children affected by multiple sclerosis. Key reminders to help you be a safe, responsible rider this weekend: - Listen to law enforcement personnel (Bike Police), Ride Marshals and support staff; they're acting in your best interests, so give them your assistance and cooperation for your own safety.
- Make sure you know how to signal a SAG if you need a lift. (Get off the road. Get off your bike. Wave your helmet at the SAG driver.)
- For your safety and the safety of all riders, make sure personal support vehicles use the alternate route and avoid traveling on the same roads as cyclists.
- Write your emergency contact information on the back of your rider number bib. This is vital for medical crews who may need this information.
Also, follow these helpful guidelines for riding in the rain: Cornering - Make turns slowly and consistently (no jerky movements).
- Keep your weight on the outside pedal in the 6 o'clock position.
- If you need to brake in a turn, apply the brakes slowly.
Braking - Remember: Water on the rims will lubricate your brake system, making it hard to stop.
- Apply the brakes lightly to clean off the rims before you need to stop.
- Allow a greater distance for stopping.
Hazards - Bridges, metal grates, painted lines, manhole covers and crosswalks can be very slick.
- Avoid puddles; they may conceal deep potholes.
- Remember that, during the first few minutes of rain, oil seeps from the roadway, making it very slick; ride accordingly.
Protect Yourself - Visibility can be limited during a storm; wear bright clothing.
- Keep your eyes free of debris with yellow or clear lenses in your glasses.
- Wear waterproof clothing that is breathable with layers underneath.
Protect Your Bike - Front and rear fenders will keep you and your bike dry.
- Lube your chain before and after a wet ride to replace the lube that washed off.
- Drip chain lube down into your brake and shifter cables to avoid rust.
The 2010 registration fee is $100, which helps offset organizational expenses for fuel, supplies and safety support, further ensuring more funds go directly toward MS research and services. The minimum fundraising pledge -- as in 2009 -- is $400. If needed, you can also use convenient transportation services for $35 per rider. Your participation and support will keep us moving forward on the road toward our 2010 fundraising goal of $17 million to help men, women and children with multiple sclerosis.

This will be my 7th year to participate in the Lone Star Chapter's bike ride from Houston to Austin. I'm sure it will be as enjoyable as ever and, as always, I will do my part to raise money and fight for the cure of multiple sclerosis.
Please help me in my efforts by donating what you can here online. It's fast, simple, safe and secure.
